Meet Vela, the fox who keeps the observatory
Who looks after the dome at night, where her name comes from, and the things she has promised never to do.
An observatory needs someone on the night shift, and ours is kept by Vela: an adult red fox in a midnight-blue frock coat, unhurried, dry-witted and very particular about where the brass instruments go. We wanted a host who would feel at home among grown-ups at two in the morning, not a cartoon mascot, and a composed fox with a good coat turned out to be exactly that.
A name taken from the sky
Vela is a real constellation in the southern sky. Its name means the Sails, because it was once part of a much larger figure of a ship. That felt right for someone whose job is to read the stars and keep everyone on course, so the name stuck the moment we tried it.
The site's name came from a different direction. Star charts used to be drawn by hand on vellum, a fine parchment, and we liked the idea of a sheet of vellum full of stars. Starvellan is our own blend of the two words: a made-up name with a picture behind it, not a piece of real history.
What she looks after
- The Observatory itself, with the Compass Wheel, the Star cards, Missions and your Orbit meter.
- Your chart: every time you reach a new level, she adds a gift of Glints worth 150 times that level.
- Your balance: if it runs dry, she tops it up with 5,000 Glints, free of charge.

Glints, and why they shine
The points you play with are called Glints, after the small flashes of light you catch at the edge of a telescope's view. They are pleasant to collect and worth nothing outside Starvellan. Glints have no cash value, they are never sold, and they cannot be exchanged for anything at all.
Her promises
We settled early on what Vela would never do. She will not nag you to return, she will not count down to anything, and she will not suggest that a fortune is waiting in the next spin. Her job is to make the place feel calm and welcoming, and now and then to point out that stepping away for a while is a perfectly sensible idea.
