Cookies, storage and your choice
Not one cookie is set on Starvellan. What the site does use is a short list of entries in your browser's storage, which make your account, the age question and your preferences work. Every entry is catalogued below.

1. The short answer
Our pages set no cookies and our server sends none. You will find no advertising, no analytics, no social media widgets and no tracking of any kind. Nothing is loaded from other companies, whether scripts, fonts or images, so no third party can put anything on your device by way of Starvellan.
2. Local and session storage explained
Alongside cookies, browsers give websites two places to keep small notes on your device. Local storage holds them until you or the site deletes them; session storage holds them only until the tab or browser is closed. Neither is sent to our server with your requests, unlike cookies. The Privacy and Electronic Communications Regulations (PECR) still treat them like cookies, so we list them here.
Almost every entry below is essential: it powers something you asked for, such as your account or the age check, and needs no consent under the law. A single entry is optional, and it is only written once you pick "Accept optional" in the cookie notice.
3. The full inventory
| Key | Where | Purpose | Type | Lifetime |
|---|---|---|---|---|
sv.users | Local storage | Accounts made in this browser: email, player name, name, date of birth, part of the UK, hashed password and recovery key, Glints, level, favourites, Observatory progress, player care settings and the sound setting of signed-in players. | Essential | Until the account is deleted or this site's data is cleared |
sv.session | Local storage | The signed-in account, after joining or after signing in with "keep me signed in" ticked. | Essential | Until you sign out or clear this site's data |
sv.session | Session storage | The signed-in account, when "keep me signed in" is unticked. | Essential | Until you sign out or close the tab |
sv.lockout | Local storage | Failed sign-in attempts per email address and the time of the latest. Five wrong passwords pause sign-in for one minute. | Essential (security) | Reset by the next successful sign-in; otherwise until this site's data is cleared |
sv.age | Local storage | Your answer "I am 18 or older", so the question is not repeated on every page. | Essential | Until this site's data is cleared |
sv.consent | Local storage | Your answer in the cookie notice: accept or reject optional storage. | Essential | Until you change it or clear this site's data |
sv.playStart | Session storage | When the current visit began, so the time reminder in your player care settings knows when to check in. | Essential | Until the tab is closed |
sv.sound | Local storage | Sound on or off, for visitors who are not signed in. | Optional (only after "Accept optional") | Until this site's data is cleared |
There are no others. If you reject optional storage, sv.sound is never written; the sound switch still works, but only on the page in front of you.
4. Demo play leaves no trace
Playing without an account writes nothing at all. Practice credits are held only in the memory of the open page, so a reload or a closed tab wipes them, and nothing about a demo session is saved to your device or sent to us.
5. Why browser storage, not a server
Keeping accounts in your browser means your details, Glints and progress never sit in a database of ours. The trade-off is that only you hold them: we cannot see or restore them, and they exist only in the browser where you created them. Our Terms of Use explain what that means for lost passwords and changed devices.
6. Changing your mind
Your choice is never final. Reopen the cookie notice with the button below, or with the Cookie settings link in the footer of every page, and pick "Accept optional" or "Reject optional".
Moving from accept to reject removes the saved sound setting (sv.sound) immediately, and no further changes to it are stored.
7. Removing storage yourself
Read this first: your account exists only in this browser. Clearing this site's data erases the account, its Glints and its progress permanently, and we have no way to bring them back.
Browser menus are renamed from time to time, but the route is usually as follows:
- Chrome: select the icon to the left of the address, open "Cookies and site data", then "Manage on-device site data", and delete starvellan.co.uk.
- Edge: go to Settings, then "Cookies and site permissions", then "Manage and delete cookies and site data", then "See all cookies and site data", and remove starvellan.co.uk.
- Firefox: select the padlock beside the address and choose "Clear cookies and site data".
- Safari on a Mac: go to Settings, then Privacy, then "Manage Website Data", find starvellan.co.uk and choose Remove.
- Safari on iPhone or iPad: in the Settings app, open Safari, then Advanced, then Website Data, and swipe to delete starvellan.co.uk.
Private and incognito windows empty their storage when closed, so an account made in one will not outlast it.
8. Questions and updates
If the code ever starts using a new storage entry, it will be added to this list before it goes live, and the date at the top will change. Anything unclear? Write to privacy@starvellan.co.uk. For how we handle personal data more broadly, see our Privacy Notice.
